How do I contact the car breakdown company?
Picnic’s breakdown cover is provided by the RAC, and we recommend saving their number so it’s easy to find if you need help. For breakdowns in the UK, call 0330 159 8714 or visit myRAC's Rescue Me.
For European breakdowns, call 00 33 472 43 52 55. You can check exactly what cover you have in your policy documents, which you’ll find in Your Account if you don’t have them to hand.
Am I covered for glass or windscreen damage?
You can check your full policy wording in Your Account. Most comprehensive Picnic policies include windscreen cover as standard (excluding Picnic Essentials). If the glass can be repaired, the excess is £25, and if it needs replacing it’s £150 on Picnic and Picnic Premier policies. Cover applies to one item of glass only and doesn’t include window mechanisms, non‑glass parts, panoramic or convertible roofs, sunroofs, lights or reflectors.
Click here to can book a repair or replacement, and our windscreen provider will check your cover for you. If you’re not covered, you can still go ahead but you’ll need to pay the costs. Windscreen claims aren’t recorded as a claim on your policy and won’t affect your No Claims Discount, though some insurers may still consider them when pricing.
How do I claim on car insurance Key Assist cover?
If your keys have been lost, stolen or damaged by accidental means (In the UK or the European Union) and you need to make a claim, you can do so online via Your Account or over the phone on 0333 241 3390 where our dedicated Claims team is ready to help you 24/7, 365 days a year.
Don't worry, a key claim won't show as a claim and won't impact your No Claims Discount.
What does Excess Protect cover?
Excess Protect helps cover the excess you pay if you make a valid claim on your main motor insurance for accidental damage, fire, theft, flood or vandalism. You can claim more than once in a policy year, up to the total limit shown in your policy schedule. To make a claim, you’ll need to show proof that you’ve paid your excess. Claims aren’t covered if your main insurer turns them down, the claim is for glass repairs or replacement, personal belongings, or if someone else has already agreed to pay your excess. For theft, malicious damage or vandalism, you’ll need to report the incident to the police and get a crime reference number.
What is covered by Picnic's Hire Car Cover?
Hire Car cover gives you up to 21 days of car hire if your insured car is written off or stolen and not recovered, as long as a Hire Car policy was in place when the incident happened. It covers Group A cars (like a 1.0‑litre car) and any named driver on your certificate of insurance.
The cover doesn’t include fuel, fines or other costs you need to pay while using the hire car, and it ends after 21 days or once payment is made based on Picnic’s valuation of your car - whichever comes first. Claims must be reported within 14 days, and theft must be reported to the police.
What is Key Assist?
We don’t want you to be stuck without your car, so Picnic’s Key Assist cover helps if your keys are lost, stolen or accidentally damaged. It covers replacing car keys (including immobilisers or alarms if they can’t be reprogrammed), locksmith costs, and new locks if there’s a security risk, plus all the home and office keys on the same keyring.
If your car can’t be used while your keys are replaced, you can get up to three days’ car hire at £50 a day. You can make more than one claim during your policy, up to £1,500 in total, and key claims won’t affect your No Claims Discount.
The cover doesn’t apply to wear and tear, claims made in the first 48 hours, losses reported after 30 days, claims over the £1,500 limit, or keys lost or stolen while with someone else. If your keys have been lost, stolen or damaged by accidental means, all you need to do is chat to our dedicated team via chat or contact us online to let us know what’s happened and we’ll be happy to help.
What does the additional Personal Accident cover protect me for?
Personal Accident Cover gives you extra peace of mind if you’re injured, or if the worst happens, after an accident in your car. It can pay up to £60,000 for certain serious injuries or death to you or your passengers, plus £100 a day for up to 180 days if you’re in hospital or temporarily unable to work or manage everyday activities. It also includes aftercare like physiotherapy and counselling, with up to £2,000 for each. You’ll get a payment regardless of who was at fault.
The cover doesn’t apply to accidents at age 81 or over, accidents involving vehicles other than private cars, sickness or disease, or where policy conditions haven’t been followed. View full details of our Personal Accident cover and documents here.
